Man with an Indian accent calling himself "James App;eton from the ATO asked to call to avoid arrest for Tax avoidance ..

ust received a call from this number. Pre-recorded, stating that to avoid arrest I should call back or refer to my lawyer(?) and have them call on my behalf.

I telephoned back and the number does not answer and the line drops after 3 rings.

Can't take this seriously at all, and have blocked the number.

When you call this number, the person answering pretends to be from the Australian Taxation Office. I am an accountant in public practice and a client of mine called and was told to pay an outstanding debt, otherwise he would face serious consequences. It is a scam.
